Tackling medicines wastage across Hertfordshire and west Essex

Every year in Hertfordshire and west Essex we waste an estimated £7 million of unused medicine.

This suggests patients are not taking medicines as prescribed and/or patients are receiving more medicines than they actually need.

The ‘Look in the bag’ campaign forms part of a wider medicines’ waste management project within the STP and aims to increase patients’ awareness of medicines waste and how they are able to help with reducing this.

The campaign launched in late November and as part of the communications work with the media was featured on BBC Look East evening news last Wednesday (4 December). They interviewed Rakesh, the pharmacist at Metwest Pharmacy in Harlow as well as our Chair, Dr Rob Gerlis. Both Rakesh and Rob outlined how people could help reduce waste and therefore money for the NHS.

Within the STP it’s part one of a four part campaign, the next element to be covered will be ‘ask your pharmacist’.

More details on this in 2019 so watch this space, we might be on Look East again!
