iGAS outbreak

Many of you may be aware of the recent outbreak of invasive Group A Streptococcus (iGAS) in mid-Essex.  We have recently been informed of two cases within the NHS West Essex CCG boundary. Sadly, one West Essex patient has died.

Following investigation, both of the West Essex patients with iGAS infection have been linked to the mid-Essex outbreak. The patients affected are older members of the community receiving treatment for wounds in care homes or in their own homes.

You can find further information and some background on the Mid Essex CCG website.  This includes background information on iGAS and details of a Freephone helpline that has been set up for anyone with concerns. The number is 03000 032124 and lines are Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

We are working closely with the incident team, hosted at mid-Essex. We will be in touch with further updates in due course.

If a member of the media gets in touch please let the communications team know. They will then direct the enquiry.
